Wow great review! I randomly stumbled upon this book at a retirement community when I was on vacation at my in-laws place in florida last week. Pretty excited to dig in. I enjoyed Being digital by negroponte a few years back.
More examples of ahead-of-their-time failures from John Backus: https://twitter.com/backus/status/105...
The absurdity of most startup plans: https://marginalrevolution.com/margin... (and Cowen doesn't even include Netflix)
An earlier example, Rockefeller: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... an apparently irrational bet on a dubious technological change which would have utterly ruined him and his reputation if it hadn't gone better than anyone else dreamed at the time.
